Migraines can be an extremely stressful and painful experience, and sometimes migraine treatment doesn't necessarily work as quickly as you would like! Here at the Melville Wellness Centre, we wanted to give you some tips on preventing migraines before they happen and help keep them at bay.
1. Keep a headache and food diary
Keeping a headache diary can make it easy to identify what may trigger your migraines. Once these things are identified, you can more easily avoid them and prevent triggering a migraine. There are some foods and drinks that can also contribute to headaches and migraines, for example, cheese, red wine, chocolate and processed meats, amongst others, can all trigger headaches. By noting what you eat, you can identify if there are specific foods that induce your migraines and then take proactive steps to avoid them in your diet.
2. Keep your stress levels low
Being stressed significantly increases the chances of bringing on a migraine. To reduce your stress levels, we would recommend yoga or meditation to calm down your body and your mind. Yoga does not put too much strain on the body or mind which is why it is an appropriate stress reducer. It's worth bearing in mind that not all exercises are stress-reducing, high-intensity exercises such as cardio or weightlifting can contribute to headaches as well.
3. Rest well
Maintaining a good sleep schedule is imperative to preventing migraines. A well-balanced sleep schedule is key to avoiding any headaches, so do your best to prevent undersleeping and oversleeping. It's recommended that adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night and maintain this to ensure a healthy sleep schedule. If you don't usually sleep well, creating a bedtime routine and going to bed at the same time every night will help.
