Sciatica pain: how a chiropractor can help

Sciatica is a debilitating problem caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve; which is the longest nerve in the human body. The pain radiates from the lower back and travels down one or both legs. The pain is felt more severely in the legs and may be associated with sharp electric pain, tingling, burning, numbness and muscle spasms.

It is advisable to seek treatment as soon as possible to avoid the progression of symptoms. A visit to a chiropractor is a great place to start. Chiropractic treatments are non-surgical, don't require drugs and focus on manipulating the spine to ease the pain due to restricted spinal movement. Here is a brief look at the effective therapies used by chiropractors in the treatment of sciatica pain:

Hot and cold therapy

An ice pack is first placed on the lower back (where the pain originates) for about 10-15 minutes to numb the area. A heating pad is then applied to help your blood circulate again. The cold and heat are alternated to promote quicker healing by reducing inflammation that may be causing sciatica pain.

Ultrasound

This is a gentle heat developed by sound waves that are applied to the tissues. The heat deeply penetrates the tissues to increase circulation, reducing muscle spasms, swelling, cramping, stiffness, and pain.

TENS – Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation

TENS is a muscle stimulating machine that produces low voltage electric pulses. The pulses are sent to the nerve fibres to interrupt the pain signals that cause sciatica pain and encourage the production of endorphins; a natural painkilling chemical produced by the body.

Spinal manipulation

Spinal adjustments mobilise the vertebral joints in the spine to allow spinal movement. This may help take the pressure off the nerves responsible for inflammation and other symptoms associated with sciatica.
