What Is a Low FODMAP Diet & Why It May Benefit Some People

Digestive discomfort is more common than many people realise. Bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and altered bowel habits can all significantly affect quality of life. One evidence-based dietary strategy that’s helped many people manage these symptoms is the low FODMAP diet. At Melville Wellness Centre, our qualified dietitian in Melville works closely with clients from across Perth to help identify whether this approach could be right for them.

What Are FODMAPs?

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. These are types of carbohydrates (sugars and fibers) found in many everyday foods. For some individuals—particularly those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)—FODMAPs can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine, leading to fermentation in the gut and causing symptoms like:

  • Bloating

  • Cramping

  • Excessive gas

  • Diarrhoea or constipation

  • Abdominal discomfort

Common high-FODMAP foods include garlic, onions, wheat, certain fruits (like apples and pears), dairy products, and legumes.

What Is the Low FODMAP Diet?

The low FODMAP diet is a structured elimination and reintroduction plan developed by Monash University in Melbourne. It involves three main phases:

  1. Elimination Phase
All high-FODMAP foods are removed from the diet for 4–6 weeks under the guidance of a trained professional.

  2. Reintroduction Phase
Individual FODMAP groups are gradually reintroduced one at a time to identify which ones trigger symptoms.

  3. Personalisation Phase
Once triggers are identified, a tailored long-term diet is developed to include as many tolerated foods as possible while avoiding symptom-causing ones.

Who Can Benefit From a Low FODMAP Diet?

This diet is particularly beneficial for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or other functional gastrointestinal disorders. Studies show that up to 75% of IBS sufferers experience significant symptom relief when following a low FODMAP approach.

However, the diet is not suitable for everyone. It’s a restrictive protocol that can lead to nutritional deficiencies if done without professional support. That’s why it’s essential to work with a qualified dietitian in Melville, like Mrs Krusha Desai at Melville Wellness Centre, to ensure the diet is done safely and effectively.
