If you’re experiencing lower back pain, the first bit of good news is that you’re not the only one. An estimated 85% of people experience back pain that is severe enough that they end up seeking out a doctor for advice (Harvard Health Publishing 2019). Increasingly, doctors are not only advising self-care, physical therapy, and pain relief for back pain treatment but increasingly are recommending patients to chiropractic care.
The second bit of good news is that chiropractic care is an effective treatment for lower back pain, even for acute back pain. Acute back pain is the type of pain occurring from a sudden injury such as a fall, heavy lifting, or getting tackled in sports. With chiropractic care, even this can be safely and effectively treated, with most acute back pain lasting no more than 6-weeks. Most people with a recent experience of back pain, are better in a few weeks and often within a few days of receiving treatment.
Research supports this. A 2018 study of 750 active-duty military personnel compared typical treatments for back pain with chiropractic treatments. Individuals who received conventional therapies, including self-care, physical therapy, and medications, alongside chiropractic treatments, reported:
• less pain intensity and less need for pain medicine,
• less disability and more improvement in function, and
• higher satisfaction with treatment after 6-weeks.
While this is the result of one study, many other studies have also concluded that therapies used by chiropractors are usually effective for treating lower back pain. Overall, it’s safe to say that there is strong research support for the effectiveness of chiropractic care for the treatment of lower back pain.
