Chiropractor or physiotherapist?

For some patients, working out which professional is going to give them the most effective treatment for a health problem can be a challenge. One of the biggest dilemmas can be whether to make an appointment to visit a chiropractor or a physiotherapist. Here we take a look at some of the key similarities and differences between the two, helping you work out which one is going to be best suited for your needs.

Chiropractors focus on the spine

Both chiropractors and physiotherapists recognise the importance of a healthy spine. A physiotherapist works on relieving pain and improving movement anywhere in the body. In comparison, a chiropractor concentrates on conditions that can be relieved through the use of spinal manipulations. Whether you're looking for back pain treatment or could do with some relief from neck pain caused by joint stiffness of trauma, a chiropractor could provide a great solution.

Spinal manipulation

Physiotherapists encourage patients to complete specific movements and exercises in order to relieve joint, muscle or nerve problems. A visit to the physiotherapist will usually result in some exercise "homework", which will need to be completed before the next visit. A chiropractor will treat the spine, completing precise, carefully targeted spinal manipulations in order to improve alignment and relieve pain. Although patients may be given exercises to complete in addition to the chiropractic treatment, these are secondary to the skilled treatment the chiropractor provides.

Chiropractors treat patients directly

Physiotherapists tend to concentrate on helping the patient to help themselves, rather than treating actively. Whereas a chiropractor might perform a manipulation to treat hip pain, a physiotherapist may suggest gait modifications, strengthening exercises for the muscles around the joint, plus various pain relief treatments such as heat or ice.

Many people turn to a chiropractor when they find that the treatments recommended by a physiotherapist aren't giving them the long-term benefits they're looking for. Active treatment from a Perth chiropractor, in addition to lifestyle advice and an exercise regime, may give a satisfactory treatment outcome.
