One of the most common questions that our chiropractors receive from headache sufferers is, 'what can I do to minimise my pain?' Let's take a look:
Try spinal manipulation
Spinal manipulation is a procedure that chiropractors use to relieve pain caused by headaches. During this treatment, a chiropractor uses their hand or a smaller instrument to deliver a controlled force to a specific area of the spinal joint. This relieves any tension that has been built up in the spine, which when left, can make the head more sensitive to pain.
Change your lifestyle
Chiropractors often give their patients some lifestyle tips to help with their headaches. For example, they may recommend cutting down on the amount of time you spend looking down at your phone or computer. They may also ask you to do some research into your posture and how to correct it.
Tension headaches are often caused by holding the neck in a certain position, such as downwards, for prolonged periods of time. This causes muscle strain, which in turn makes the body more susceptible to headaches. Depending on the nature of your job, it may be hard to avoid holding your neck or back in a certain position, so your chiropractor may give you some exercises to do as well.
Chin tuck exercises
A chin tuck is a great exercise for helping to relieve headaches. It strengthens the lower cervical extensors, the deep cervical flexors and other muscles, keeping the head pulled back in good posture.
To do this exercise, place your chair next to a wall. Sit down in the chair and press your buttocks to the back of the seat, ensuring your back is straight against the length of the chair. Now bring the front of the chin towards your chest and rest it there. Hold this position for around 5 seconds and repeat this 10 times.
