Spinal health in the hospitality industry

Serving others is central to the hospitality industry, but it's often done at the expense of workers' physical wellbeing. Working long and unusual hours, spending a lot of time on your feet, and performing manual or repetitive tasks all take their toll on the body and can even cause stress or injury. High staff turnover means safety training is often scaled back in order to get people working quickly. If you work in hospitality, you'll be glad to know there are things you can do to look after your spine and reduce the risk of an injury in the workplace.

Take breaks

If you're tired, you're more likely to be less productive or to make a poor decision. Make sure you take enough time for your body to rest between workplace tasks.

Stretch

Adding stretches to your day can help offset the impact of repetitive movements and extended periods on your feet. There are apps available that offer helpful exercises geared to improving the strength of your muscles and the health of your spine.

Keep active

At the end of the workday, it's natural to want to flop on the bed or the couch. Make sure you balance your hard-earned rest with activity. Adding exercise to your routine will help improve physical health and wellbeing.

Lift properly

Stress or pain caused by lifting objects is the most common workplace injury. Follow the correct lifting technique when moving something heavy - bending at the knees, not at the spine, and using your hips and knees to lift the object.

Keep good posture

Maintaining a good posture is critical to a healthy spine. Make sure you're aware of your posture. If you're standing or sitting awkwardly, hunching over or slouching, straighten up.
