Home remedies for sciatica provoked by pregnancy

During pregnancy, one of the most common complaints is sciatica. Caused by the irritation and inflammation of the sciatic muscles located in the lower back and upper leg, it can lead to prolonged aching of this area and shooting pains in the leg. It’s the last thing that expecting mothers need. At Melville Wellness, our team has an acute understanding of this, and have compiled this short guide packed full of home remedies that may ease your pain and relieve your discomfort...

Massages

One of the most soothing ways to stop sciatica in its tracks is through a massage. This should only be done in a way that involves light strokes, meaning it's best to look for a fully trained masseuse that is experienced in this area. However, we do understand that this can be a rather expensive habit. Luckily, however, there is a much less expensive – albeit a more unique – alternative. You can use a tennis ball. Simply place under the lower back and move around with circles – either against a chair or on the floor, whichever is most comfortable! This relieves some of the tension in the sciatic area, without breaking the bank.

Gentle exercise

When pregnant, it’s not a good idea to engage in heavy exercise. Saying this, to prevent sciatica, it's best to do a little exercise to avoid sitting or laying down for prolonged periods. Therefore, we recommend meeting in the middle and engaging in some gentle exercise. Why not simply pop to the shops or go on a short stroll? This keeps you on your feet and stretches out muscles, but in a risk-free way that isn’t too strenuous.

Hamstring stetches

Another great tip to try if you are suffering from sciatica while pregnant is to complete a few hamstring stretches. Raise the leg onto a stable object and gently bend it forward, holding this position for a few seconds. Hamstring stretches are non-strenuous and completely safe, so you're never putting yourself or your baby at risk.
