Tips to treat a headache

If you're one of the many people who get headaches on a regular basis, you know how painful and disruptive they can be. Whether it's a throbbing headache or a tension headache you can feel in your neck and shoulders, there are a few different ways to treat them and relieve your pain. In this article, we’ll touch on a few tips to treat a headache.

Sleep will help ease the headache

Sleep is important for your body to recover from stress and it’s also critical for the body to heal. Sleep helps the brain rest and repair, which can ease headaches.

For example, one study of high school students found that when people were deprived of sleep (by being kept awake by researchers), they experienced an increase in pain sensitivity and negative moods as well as a decrease in attention span and memory recall capabilities—all factors that may play into how we experience headaches.

Over-the-counter painkillers may help

Acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen have all been shown to reduce inflammation in the brain and help with the pain. Although these medications can be helpful in treating headaches, it is important to talk to your doctor before taking any medication. Just remember to take the recommended dose and do not exceed it.

If you have recurrent headaches make sure you tell your doctor

If you have recurring headaches and are seeking treatment, it is important to tell your doctor all of the following:
• How often do your headaches occur? Do they happen every day or only once in a while?
• Have you had a history of headaches?
• Do you have any other symptoms when your headache happens (such as feeling nauseous, vomiting, or seeing spots)?

• Do you have any other medical conditions (such as asthma or high blood pressure)?

Conclusion

If you have frequent headaches, it’s important to talk with someone who can help you find pain relief. You may need more than just over-the-counter medication or some rest. If this is the case, then you should consider seeing a specialist who can recommend some other options for treating your headaches.
