What gym equipment will best help me tackle sciatica?

Sciatica is a common problem and occurs when the sciatic nerve – which runs the length of your lower back, right down to your feet – becomes irritated, inflamed or compressed. It can result in back pain, a stabbing or burning sensation, or the constant tingling feeling of pins and needles. Health experts say this pain can last anywhere between four to six weeks, but rest assured there are a series of exercises you can do at the gym that can greatly reduce the pain you experience with sciatica. At Melville Wellness, we’ve created this short blog post on what gym equipment is best to use to ease your pain.

1. Elliptical machine

A common staple in most gyms, the elliptical machine is one of the best to use to ease the pain triggered by sciatica. It’s easy to get your head around too. Simply climb onto each step, grip the bars that jut out of the sides with your hands, and gently start moving forwards and backwards. What makes the elliptical machine great for sciatica is how it makes you move and stretch out one leg at a time parallel to your arms. It decompresses your spine without much pressure and gives the nerve some wiggle room.

2. Stationary bike machine

Another common sight in the gym is the stationary bike machine, which is great news because it's good for sciatica. It’s a low impact workout that places minimal stress onto your back but gets your legs going at the same time. It's a well-known fact that you have a much higher chance of eliminating sciatica if you stay active and walk around as opposed to laying down, as it works to help relax the spine.

3. Swimming pool

We’re aware that a swimming pool isn’t technically a piece of equipment, however, most gyms and leisure centres have one and they're a great way to ease sciatica. A gentle swim, or simply walking the length of the pool, will help to relieve the pressure on your spine.
